Most art education asks kids to look at things. These sessions ask them to figure out how things work. Why does a painting built with real perspective look three-dimensional when one without it never quite does? What is it, physically, about a minor key that makes it sound sad? Why did a stolen $200 million painting become worth nothing the moment it left the museum? The goal is not to train taste or produce connoisseurs. It is to give kids the conceptual vocabulary to understand what an artist is actually doing when a piece of work does something to you.
Ten sessions cover linear perspective, color theory, the physics of harmony, Warhol's assembly-line approach to what counts as art, a real unsolved museum heist, and the mechanics of what makes a song lyric actually work, twice over, once analyzing someone else's and once writing your own. Once you understand how a Warhol print dismantles what "art" even means, the canvas looks different. That's the kind of looking these sessions are after.
